HMRC Enquiries
Any unexpected letter from HMRC will be worrying. HMRC now have access to more and more information giving them a reason to contact you. We have extensive experience in liaising with HMRC to bring things to a timely conclusion and minimise any exposure to tax and penalties.

Enquiries
An enquiry is where HMRC will ask questions about an already submitted self-assessment return.
HMRC may concentrate on a specific aspect of the return or alternatively, ask for information on every entry of the return.
It is crucial that any response considers the extent of HMRC’s powers to request information and to challenge when appropriate.
We can provide expert guidance to help you navigate an enquiry, ensuring compliance while minimising stress and disruption.

Disclosures
A letter from the disclosure team suggests that HMRC have some specific information regarding your tax affairs.
Due to Automatic Exchange of Information between the UK and other countries, HMRC are now informed of assets etc. held outside the UK. Information from Land Registry can also prompt HMRC of potential unreported rental income.
Alternatively, you may have realised that you have undisclosed income and wish to make a voluntary disclosure to HMRC.
There are several ways to manage disclosures and you will receive practical guidance from us on which is the best route forward ensuring compliance while reducing risk and potential penalties.

Nudge Letters
HMRC will from time to time identify particular areas of reporting that they have realised that taxpayers potentially misunderstand what is needed.
Sometimes called “One to Many” letters, these will be sent out as a prompt for taxpayers to review their tax filings and voluntarily disclose any errors.
If you receive a nudge letter, it’s essential to review your tax position carefully and seek professional advice if needed before responding to HMRC.
We can help identify the reason the nudge letter has been issued to you and advise on what response, if any, is needed.
